# Could a Cyberattack Wipe Out Your Bank Account?

# Could a Cyberattack Wipe Out Your Bank Account?

*Attackers have already halted car production, interfered with hospital testing and sent false nuclear warnings. AI is giving them the means to find more targets and move faster. What happens when they go after the records that tell a bank what it owes you?*

By Matthew Jones

On 3 November, the head of Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre, Richard Horne, issued a warning that ought to have made every front page.

> “In the coming months, we face a real prospect of an unprecedented rise in the number of cyber incidents.”

He asked business leaders to consider what they would tell their staff, customers and families “when food isn’t on the shelves”. That’s Britain’s cyber security chief talking about the physical consequences of decisions we’ve already made. We’ve left ageing systems in service, connected more of our economy to them and given people fewer ways to get things done when those systems fail. Now attackers are getting faster.

## Look at what attackers can already do

| Target | What happened |
| --- | --- |
| Emergency warnings, Ukraine and Russia, November 2026 | Ukraine’s public air-raid app sent false warnings, including a claim that a nuclear-capable missile had been launched. Russia’s emergencies ministry said its own app also sent false alerts after a hack. Ukraine’s sirens and other warning channels continued to work. Attackers had reached a channel people use to decide whether to take shelter. |
| European supermarkets and IKEA, November 2026 | IKEA confirmed an incident affecting refrigeration controls at a Belgian store. Other European retailers reported suspected attacks on cooling systems. Access to the controls can let someone spoil food remotely. |
| UK schools, disclosed November 2026 | Researchers investigating an attack on a UK school estate said ransomware encrypted around 37 machines. They observed commands being retried and adjusted in a pattern consistent with possible AI assistance. They couldn’t confirm AI was used. |
| Iranian banks, June 2025 and June 2026 | Attackers claimed they destroyed data at Bank Sepah in 2025. Customers reportedly had trouble accessing accounts, and Reuters could not independently verify the destruction claim. A separate incident in 2026 disrupted card services across three Iranian banks, affecting cash machines, shop terminals and related mobile services. |
| Airports, September 2025 | A cyber incident at Collins Aerospace disrupted airport check-in. A single supplier was enough to cause problems across multiple airports. |
| Jaguar Land Rover, September 2025 | JLR shut down systems to contain a cyber incident, severely disrupting production and retail operations. The factory floor felt the consequences of an attack on the company’s computers. |
| M&S and Co-op, 2025 | Both suffered cyberattacks. Co-op estimated a £107 million hit to profitability as it restricted its own systems in response. |
| NHS pathology, June 2024 | Ransomware hit Synnovis, a pathology provider serving hospitals and GP practices. It severely reduced blood-testing capacity in south-east London. A supplier’s recovery became a problem for clinicians and patients. |

There’s a progression in what these incidents show. Stealing information is one thing. Stopping production, changing the temperature of a fridge or sending an emergency warning in somebody else’s name takes the damage further. It reaches the factory floor, the food supply and the decisions people make when they think their lives are in danger.

## The gap between finding a flaw and exploiting it is closing

The NCSC’s annual review says AI can already help with several stages of an attack. It can research targets, tailor messages to deceive staff, find software vulnerabilities and help write code to exploit them. Put those steps together and a group can try more targets in the time a defender has to investigate and fix a weakness. Horne said the response to one critical PHP vulnerability alone generated more than 110,000 notifications and early warnings to UK organisations. That’s the work created by one flaw in a widely used technology.

The incident figures have swung sharply. The NCSC classed 89 incidents as nationally significant in its 2024 review, 204 in 2025 and 80 in its latest review. The latest year also saw 1,831 reports of cyberattacks, with 337 incidents requiring direct support. The annual tally fluctuates. Horne’s warning is about what happens next as attackers gain the ability to exploit weaknesses at greater speed and scale.

## What if the bank can’t trust its own records?

We tend to picture a banking outage as a blank screen. The app comes back and the money is there. Now imagine the bank has reason to believe an attacker changed its records. Which payments were genuine? Which balances can it verify? How far back does it have to go to find a clean copy, and how does it account for every legitimate transaction since then?

There are three distinct ways an attack can hit your money. It can block access, as the disruption to Iranian card services showed. It can move money fraudulently. In the Bangladesh Bank case, US prosecutors documented hackers issuing fraudulent transfer instructions that sent $81 million to accounts in the Philippines. And it can target the records themselves. That was the claim at Bank Sepah. The extent of any destruction there remains unverified.

The UK government has put a sophisticated cyberattack on a retail bank’s internal systems into its National Risk Register as a reasonable worst-case scenario. The Bank of England has separately stress-tested suspected cyber disruption to the settlement of wholesale transactions and how it could affect financial stability. Its 2026 exercise looks at what happens when a cloud provider or another shared supplier is disrupted. The authorities are planning for failures that can spread beyond the organisation where they begin. A permanent wipeout of UK household balances remains a hypothetical outcome. A serious attack on the systems that record and move that money is a risk officials already plan for.

## Prepare while everything works

The government asks households to be ready for three days and to keep some cash in case electronic payments or ATMs are disrupted. Think through what that means for your household. Could you pay for essentials if your usual card stopped working? Could you find the bank’s number and a recent statement if you couldn’t log in? If you run a business, could you pay staff or suppliers while your bank investigates an attack?

Cash can help you get through a payment outage. Physical gold serves a different purpose. A coin you hold yourself can’t be erased from a server or transferred out of your possession by someone who steals a password. But your ownership doesn’t depend on a bank’s systems being online or its records being right.

We’ve spent years asking what else we can put online. After the attacks we’ve already seen, there’s a question we should be asking with at least as much urgency.

How much of our lives can we still run if the systems we depend on come back online and we can’t trust what they say?
