# The Christmas gift they might still have in 30 years

**A gold coin each Christmas could become more than a collection. For parents and grandparents, it is a way of giving a child something for today—and something for the future.**

**By Matthew Jones, Co-founder and Precious Metals Analyst, Britannia Bullion**

Anyone who has watched a young child open Christmas presents knows there is no predicting which gift will be the favourite. Sometimes it is the toy everyone searched for. Sometimes it is the empty cardboard box the toy came in.

That is part of the joy of Christmas. Children live in the moment, and they should.

But parents and grandparents also know what often happens next. The must-have present is played with constantly for a few weeks, moves to a shelf by spring, and eventually finds its way into a charity shop bag. The gadget that seemed indispensable is replaced by another. Yesterday’s obsession becomes something they have grown out of.

What if, alongside the presents chosen for *this* Christmas, we gave one chosen for Christmases still to come?

## One coin. One Christmas. A tradition begins.

The idea is simple: buy a gold coin for a child each Christmas, keep it safely, and gradually build a collection to give them when they turn 18 or 21.

A Sovereign or Britannia could be accompanied by a handwritten note recording the year, the child’s age and a few words from the person who gave it. Perhaps a photograph from that Christmas, too.

Nothing elaborate. Just something personal.

“This was the year you learned to ride your bike.”

“This was your first Christmas in the new house.”

“You were determined to stay awake and catch Father Christmas. You nearly managed it.”

The child may initially be far more interested in the cardboard box. That is perfectly all right. The gift is waiting for them to grow into it.

One coin becomes two, then five, then ten. Over time, the collection records more than its weight in gold. It records a childhood.

## A present with a longer future

As families begin thinking about Christmas 2026, there is an opportunity to look beyond the annual shopping list and ask a slightly different question: what would we like our children to have kept?

For some, the answer might be a favourite book, a piece of jewellery or a treasured photograph. Gold can sit comfortably among those things: a physical object with both a personal story and a financial value.

Unlike a balance on a screen, a coin is something a child can eventually hold, examine and recognise. It has a date, a design and a place in their own history.

That does not mean it will increase in value every year. Gold prices fluctuate, sometimes sharply. But the purpose of a tradition like this is to think beyond the next price movement and towards a milestone years ahead.

The purchase is made at Christmas. The intention stretches much further.

## Why it can mean so much to grandparents

For a grandparent, the appeal is easy to understand.

There is pleasure in giving something a grandchild wants now. There is a different kind of satisfaction in giving something they may appreciate more deeply later.

A collection built over the years says: “I was thinking about your future, even while we were enjoying today.”

When it is eventually handed over, the handwritten notes may be treasured every bit as much as the coins.

Imagine opening that collection at 21 and finding a message written when you were three. You might have no memory of receiving the gift, but there, in familiar handwriting, is a small piece of someone’s love and hopes for you.

That is something a bank statement cannot quite capture.

## Make the tradition fit the family

This should never become another source of Christmas financial pressure.

A full one-ounce gold Britannia is a substantial purchase. Smaller gold Britannias, including quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce versions, offer other sizes to consider. Families should compare the total price and the premium above the value of the gold, rather than assuming smaller coins offer the same value per gram.

There is no rule that says the collection must contain the same coin every year—or that a purchase must be made every Christmas.

Some families might contribute together. Others might reserve gold for particular milestones, such as a first Christmas, a tenth birthday or finishing school.

A tradition should fit comfortably around family life. Missing a year does not undo the thought behind it.

## The handover is another beginning

At 18 or 21, the collection could become a tangible contribution towards adult life.

It might help with education, training or a future home. The recipient might sell part of it, keep all of it, or decide to carry on adding to the collection themselves.

The giver cannot know exactly what that young person’s circumstances will be. That is part of the point: the gift leaves them with a choice.

It can also open a useful conversation about saving, ownership and patience. A collection assembled gradually makes the passage of time visible. It shows what repeated, considered decisions can build.

That lesson need not interrupt Christmas morning. There will be plenty of time for it later.

## Keep the practical side simple

Anyone starting a collection should buy from a reputable dealer, understand what they are purchasing and keep the receipts and accompanying records.

Safe storage and appropriate insurance matter from the outset. Families should also be clear about who owns the coins and who is looking after them until the intended handover.

Gold produces no income, its value can fall as well as rise, and buying and selling involve costs. Nobody should promise a child what their collection will be worth in 18 years.

What they can promise is that each coin was chosen with them in mind.

There will always be room under the tree for toys, books and gadgets. They help make the day.

But alongside them, one carefully chosen gift could still be there when childhood has become a collection of memories—and perhaps when that child has children of their own.

**Some gifts are made to be enjoyed today. Others are made to be treasured for a lifetime.**
