# The Eye of the Storm

*The first shock has arrived. The question is what follows it.*

There is a strange moment in the middle of a storm when the wind drops, the sky brightens and people step outside. For a few minutes, it can feel as though the danger has passed.

That is the mistake the eye of the storm invites us to make.

The first wave of this economic storm is already visible. Oil prices have surged, vital shipping routes remain under pressure, and the cost of moving goods and fuel is rising. The [International Energy Agency reported in September](https://www.iea.org/reports/oil-market-report-september-2026) that global observed oil inventories had fallen by 507 million barrels since February. Those stocks have helped absorb disruption, but they are a buffer that can be drawn down only once.

Yet for many people, everyday life still feels remarkably normal. Supermarket shelves are full. Businesses are trading. Financial markets continue to open each morning. It is tempting to look around and conclude that the worst has been avoided.

Perhaps it has. But an oil shock does not reach every part of an economy on the day the price rises.

Fuel costs work their way through haulage, farming, manufacturing and food production. Companies decide how much of those costs they can absorb and how much they must pass on. Households feel the change when they fill the car, pay an energy bill or reach the checkout. The distance between the first shock and the final bill can create an illusion of calm.

The next threat is the collision of weaker growth and stubborn inflation. If businesses and households spend more on essentials, they have less to spend elsewhere. Companies may delay investment or hiring. At the same time, higher energy and transport costs can keep pushing prices upward. That is an uncomfortable combination for anyone hoping interest rates will provide quick relief.

Food deserves particular attention. A rise in fuel costs can make growing, processing and delivering it more expensive. That does **not** mean empty shelves are inevitable. It does mean that food prices and supply chains become more exposed if disruption persists or another poor harvest adds pressure.

Then there is the quieter risk: what happens to the value of money itself? When governments face rising costs, weak growth and heavy debt, the pressure to borrow more becomes harder to escape. Borrowing does not automatically mean currency debasement. But if prices rise faster than the return on savings, the purchasing power of those savings still falls. The account balance may look reassuring while the amount it can buy steadily shrinks.

No one can say precisely how the second half of this storm will unfold. Oil supplies could recover. Inflation could ease. Some of today’s threats may never become tomorrow’s crisis. But a plan for protecting wealth should not depend on every risk disappearing at once.

This is why preparation matters most during the apparent lull. It gives you time to ask whether your wealth is sufficiently diversified, how exposed it is to inflation and whether you own anything tangible outside the financial system.

Physical gold cannot prevent a recession, fill a supermarket shelf or guarantee a return. It can, however, form part of a longer-term strategy for people who want to hold a tangible asset alongside their other investments.

The eye of a storm is a chance to take stock. It is not a signal to put the shutters away.
