The 2018 Black Bull of Clarence is the fourth release in The Royal Mint’s acclaimed Queen’s Beasts series, a collection that honours the ten heraldic statues positioned at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Each beast represents a significant strand of royal heritage, and the Black Bull of Clarence is no exception—embodying strength, power, and noble lineage.
Historically linked to the House of York, the Black Bull symbolises the might and military prowess of the Plantagenet kings. Its commanding presence and fierce posture make it one of the most visually striking beasts in the series, representing dominance and unwavering loyalty to the Crown.
The obverse features the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Surrounding Her Majesty’s likeness is the inscription: “ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • 100 POUNDS.”
On the reverse, Jody Clark also designs the image of the Black Bull of Clarence, shown holding a shield bearing the Royal Arms of England. Encircling the image is the legend: “BLACK BULL OF CLARENCE • 1 oz • FINE GOLD • 999.9 • 2018.”
