The 2017 Griffin of Edward III is the second release in The Royal Mint’s celebrated Queen’s Beasts series, a tribute to the ten heraldic statues that flanked the entrance to Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Each beast represents a part of the Queen’s ancestry, and the Griffin of Edward III stands out as a symbol of courage, strength, and steadfast guardianship.
The griffin, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, has long been associated with vigilance and nobility. As a royal emblem, it combines the king of beasts and the king of birds—representing dominion over both land and sky, and an unyielding protector of treasure and truth.
The obverse of the coin features the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. The surrounding legend reads: “ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • 100 POUNDS.”
On the reverse, also designed by Jody Clark, the Griffin of Edward III is shown fiercely clutching a shield emblazoned with the Round Tower of Windsor. The outer text reads: “GRIFFIN OF EDWARD III • 1 oz • FINE GOLD • 999.9 • 2017.”
