The 2017 Red Dragon of Wales is the third release in The Royal Mint’s iconic Queen’s Beasts series, which pays homage to the ten heraldic statues that stood guard at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Each creature represents a key part of the monarch’s lineage, and the Red Dragon is a powerful symbol of Welsh identity, strength, and sovereignty.
With deep roots in Welsh mythology and royal history, the Red Dragon has long been associated with resilience and victory. Its fiery form and fierce presence on this coin make it one of the most dynamic and historically resonant beasts in the series.
The obverse of the coin features the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. The inscription encircling the portrait reads: “ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • 100 POUNDS.”
On the reverse, also by Jody Clark, the Red Dragon of Wales is shown clutching a shield bearing the arms of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Prince of Wales. The outer inscription reads: “RED DRAGON OF WALES • 1 oz • FINE GOLD • 999.9 • 2017.”
