The 2016 Lion of England is the inaugural release in The Royal Mint’s renowned Queen’s Beasts series, launched in March 2016. Inspired by the ten heraldic statues that stood at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, this series pays tribute to the rich symbols of royal ancestry that have shaped centuries of British history. The Lion of England, one of the oldest and most recognisable royal emblems, leads the series with a bold expression of strength, courage, and authority.
The lion has long been a powerful symbol of the British monarchy, appearing on coats of arms, flags, and royal seals for generations. Its presence on this first coin in the collection sets the tone for the grandeur and heritage embodied throughout the series.
The obverse features the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Jody Clark. The inscription around the portrait reads: “ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • 100 POUNDS.” The Latin abbreviations stand for “Dei Gratia Regina, Fidei Defensor,” meaning “By the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.”
On the reverse, also designed by Jody Clark, the Lion of England is shown in a stylised pose, standing proudly as it holds a shield bearing the Royal Arms. The surrounding legend reads: “LION OF ENGLAND • 1 oz • FINE GOLD • 999.9 • 2016.”
