The 2018 Unicorn of Scotland marks the fifth release in The Royal Mint’s distinguished Queen’s Beasts series, a tribute to the ten heraldic statues that stood at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. Each beast symbolises a key aspect of royal ancestry, and the Unicorn of Scotland brings with it a rich legacy of mythology and national pride.
This mythical creature has long been associated with purity, innocence, and power. In Scottish heraldry, the unicorn is a symbol of strength tamed only by a sovereign—making it a fitting emblem for a royal lineage that spans centuries.
The obverse of the coin features the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. The surrounding inscription reads: “ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • 100 POUNDS.”
On the reverse, Jody Clark also lends his artistry to the depiction of the Unicorn of Scotland, shown rearing proudly behind a shield. The outer edge bears the inscription: “UNICORN OF SCOTLAND • 1 oz • FINE GOLD • 999.9 • 2018.”
